Web Quest Prairie Museum

Who Am I? A fifth grade teacher enjoying my 27th year at Shiocton Elementary School. At this rural school setting I am able to incorporate nature into lessons every day. In springtime the ancient sturgeon and walleye run in the Wolf River, and the sky is full of geese and swans returning from migration sites. My school has received a state grant to develop a Prairie on Site, and I am honored to be one of the Project Staff. The endangered Prairie Ecosystem must be restored. My Web Quest is designed to offer basic knowledge and appreciation of prairies.

How do you feel about the prairie? What pictures come to your mind when you hear the word? Can you name at least 2 prairie plants and animals now? You may not know that part of Wisconsin was a prairie. Which of its neighboring states also had prairies? A prairie grew where there was not enough rainfall to support a forest and yet not dry enough to become a desert! Your MISSION is to become familiar and comfortable with the specific plants and animals that inhabited the prairie ecosystem. Have fun as you explore the web sites which I have selected for you! They will enrich your knowledge, and inspire you for the tasks you will need to complete.

Enjoy this quest! You will learn how each animal and plant interacts with abiotic, or non-living, factors of the prairie. Each has its niche and plays a unique role within the sun, soil, and atmosphere of the prairie ecosystem. Begin by enjoying an awesome photo collection of the prairie.
